Scott and I built an abrasion resistance testing machine a few months back, using a belt sander and an Arduino Uno for the logic and data display. It allows our company to perform tests on different materials like knit fabrics, woven fabrics, and leather, to see how long it takes before the material is sanded completely through. This is a good thing to find out before you’re skidding down the road on your ass at 50mph.
Requirements for building the machine are based on the European standard for impact abrasion resistance testing, which you can download from the link at the bottom of this page. You’ll also find a link to our Arduino code there.
If you’d like to build your own version of our machine, you’ll need the following items:
- Arduino Uno
- Screw Shield V2
- Adafruit LCD Shield 16×2 RGB
- Soldering iron & solder
- 36AWG copper wire (AKA magnet wire)
- A belt sander
- 60 grit sanding belts
- A means to build a stand for the armature (ours is made of spare pieces of 1×6)
- A means to build the armature and weighted cylinder per the European specification
- Fabric to test, plus a hose clamp to hold the fabric onto the cylinder
- A way to connect length of copper wire to ground on the armature, plus connecting them to the input pins on the Arduino (input pins should be set to INPUT_PULLUP mode)
